Celebrity Big Brother producers are reportedly hopeful of signing up Strictly Come Dancing head judge Shirley Ballas for the new series

Strictly Come Dancing head judge Shirley Ballas has emerged as a surprise target for Celebrity Big Brother.

The iconic reality show is returning to UK screens after almost six years away this spring for a new run on ITV1 and ITVX.

A number of names have already been linked with the show, including WAG Rebekah Vardy, Boris Johnson's former "associate" Jennifer Arcuri and ex-This Morning host Phillip Schofield, and now The Sun has said that ITV is making a bold move for BBC star Ballas.

A source told the newspaper: "Shirley is deep in discussions about swapping her judge's seat for the Big Brother diary room chair.

"She is a big fan of the show and said she wanted to take part to show the public a different side to her than the woman people are used to seeing on Strictly.

"The only thing holding Shirley back is the BBC's position on her taking the job as she wants to keep everyone happy.

"ITV think Shirley would be a sensational signing and they're keen to get her on board. She is confident, outspoken and would make brilliant television."

The new series is due to begin in March.
