ITV and Sky News are to broadcast live debates featuring the contenders for the Conservative Party leadership next week.

ITV and Sky News have announced plans to broadcast live debates with the Conservative Party leadership contenders next week.

The UK is on the verge of getting a new Prime Minister after Boris Johnson's decision to step down last week - and members of the Conservative Party will be responsible for choosing the next PM from a final shortlist of two candidates.

Prior to that ballot, the parliamentary Conservative party will have to whittle down the candidates to just two from the current field of 11 contenders.

ITV's debate will air live this Sunday at 7pm, with Kay Burley hosting Sky's debate the following night.

Michael Jermey, ITV's director of news, said: "Television debates at important elections help voters engage with politics. ITV has been the home of some of the biggest political debates over the past decade.

"Sunday's debate will be an important event as the country's next Prime Minister is chosen."

Sky News head John Ryley said: "There has never been a more important time to reinvigorate the trust of voters in the office of the Prime Minister.

"This live TV debate on Sky News gives the candidates a chance to reconnect with millions by debating the major issues facing Britain. It presents a unique opportunity to re-engage a disillusioned electorate."

The BBC is also thought to be planning a debate but has yet to confirm broadcast details.
