UKTV boss open to potential new channels

UKTV general manager Steve North says that he is open to the idea of launching new channels in the future.

UKTV general manager Steve North has said that the broadcaster is open to the idea of launching new channels in the future should an opportunity arise.

Since its launch in the 1990s, UKTV has had an ever-changing portfolio of channels and, following a change in ownership structure last year, currently has seven stations in its lineup - Gold, Dave, W, Alibi, Drama, Eden and Yesterday.

Asked at the Edinburgh TV Festival whether UKTV's portfolio is now complete, North replied: "We'll keep looking. The TV market is always changing - I think as we come out of COVID it will be interesting to see what happens to that landscape, how tastes of viewers may change, will we have different genres spark up and change maybe what's in their viewing habits.

"If we see that, we'll try to take advantage and if there are new opportunities to launch new services, and it's something that UKTV can take advantage of, we'll look at that.

"There's nothing there at the moment that we're looking to do, but if an opportunity presents itself and we think we can serve an audience in a new way, we'll definitely look to try to do that."

Now-closed channels in the network include Play UK, UKTV Bright Ideas, UKTV Gardens and UKTV People.
