Veteran broadcaster Alastair Stewart reveals that his retirement earlier this year was the result of a diagnosis of dementia.

Alastair Stewart has revealed that the reason for his retirement earlier this year came about following a diagnosis of early onset dementia.

The 71-year-old - a veteran of the UK newsreading landscape - stepped down from his presenting duties on GB News in March, explaining that he wanted to spend more time with his family.

Now Stewart has shared the news that his decision was informed by the dementia diagnosis, which he discovered after feeling "discombobulated" and visiting his GP.

Scans revealed that he had suffered a series of strokes and was in the early stages of dementia.

Speaking to GB News' Camilla Tominey, he said: "If you do think there is something wrong with you, then go and see the GP and listen to what he or she says.

"But also do remember that the people you work with and the people you live with and share your life with are the most important people in the entire world."

Stewart has been retained on the books at GB News and will return to the channel to commentate on major events in future.
