Coronation Street legend Charles Lawson says that the soap "was better in the '80s and '90s".

Coronation Street legend Charles Lawson has lamented the changes to the soap over the last few decades.

The actor first played the iconic role of Jim McDonald between 1989 and 2000 - a period when Corrie went from being broadcast from three times a week to four - and has returned for several stints since, most recently in 2018.

The show is now airing six times a week and Lawson believes that the increase in production has led to an inevitable decline in quality.

"Do I think it was better in the '80s and '90s? I would have to say yes," he told the Distinct Nostalgia podcast.

"That's not the cast's fault. It's very hard when you've got 70 people and six episodes to do a week.

"When I was first on it, we had more time, we had more opportunity and we had less people in the show. There was more time for characters to relate to each other."

Jim was last seen fleeing Weatherfield after attempting to convince his family that his new young girlfriend was in fact his daughter who had supposedly died during childbirth over 20 years prior.
