Coronation Street executive producer Iain MacLeod has revealed that a favourite character will die in an upcoming storyline.
The identity of the street resident who will meet their maker is unknown but their death is related to the sinkhole that opened up in the Platts' garden last year.
In a curious twist, MacLeod described the death as "tragic" but also "warm and funny".
"We have a big stunt planned that will centre around the sinkhole in the Platt family's back garden. And that will result in a death," he told the Daily Star.
"Deaths only really work if it's somebody that you really care about and it's going to be somebody that viewers know and love.
"It is going to be big. There will be loads of spectacle. It's going to be cinematic. It is going to be classic Corrie. It will be tragic, but it will also be warm and funny.
"It will have gallows humour and full of heart. And in a weird way it will be quite triumphant.
"That's what Corrie does better than any other soap. We take really big life-changing things and then we filter them through a northern tone of voice that is funny and sarcastic.
"The actor who is leaving told me, 'I love these scenes. They are the best scenes I've done on the show'. I don't think I've had it before where I've had an actor leaving the show and they've come to me and said how thrilled they are."
Coronation Street continues Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV.
