Coronation Street producer Iain MacLeod has given extensive teasers about what's to come on the soap in early 2022 - and it's set to be a year of teenage angst for Summer (Harriet Bibby).
Over the last few months, Summer has been caught up in a plot that has seen her develop a crush on teacher Daniel (Rob Mallard) as he coached her to get into Oxford University.
Worryingly, Summer - who is diabetic - has also begun to restrict her eating and fret about her weight, a development that will cause major concern for Billy (Daniel Brocklebank), Todd (Gareth Pierce) and Paul (Peter Ash).
"What we wanted to do with Harriet with Summer is a really relatable story of the pressures of being a teenage girl, encompassing having to look a certain way, romantic and academic stress, and how conforming with your peers might be risky from a health point of view," MacLeod told reporters.
"It digs further into Summer's experience as a diabetic - it's a down-to-earth story but at the core has a medical condition that many people don't know about.
"It will be a long-running, nuanced and heartbreaking watch as this promising young woman disintegrates but she will ultimately come through and value herself. She will learn to love herself – and we look at the under-explored dynamic where she has three dads, Billy, Todd and Paul, as they try to co-parent Summer, but with the undercurrent of their messed-up romantic entanglements underneath that."
Coronation Street continues Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV.
