John Savident - best known for playing the iconic Fred Elliott on Coronation Street - has died at the age of 86.
The actor played the part of the booming-voiced butcher on the ITV soap from 1994 until 2006, when the character died of a stroke on his wedding day to Bev Unwin (Susie Blake).
Fred - father to Ashley (Steve Arnold) - was also known for his multiple marriages and many more attempts to get married, including to his long-term love interest Audrey (Sue Nicholls).
Nicholls said in a statement: "I am very sad to hear of John's passing. My memories of working with you dear John on the street are a joy, and always will be.
"God bless you and thank you for being in my life. Much love to you and your friends and family."
A message on Corrie's X account read: "Everyone at Coronation Street is deeply saddened to learn of John Savident's death. As Fred Elliott, John firmly established himself in the pantheon of Coronation Street greats.
"His peerless comic timing, combined with a deep pathos arising from his outstanding dramatic skill, made Fred an unforgettable, iconic character that provided great joy to viewers for many years."
Savident is survived by his wife of 63 years, Rona, and their two children.
