Coronation Street recasts Summer Spellman

Coronation Street announces that newcomer Harriet Bibby will take over the role of Summer Spellman as the character returns to the cobbles.

Coronation Street has confirmed the recasting of Summer Spellman with newcomer Harriet Bibby taking over the role.

The character has been staying at her grandmother's during the coronavirus pandemic but will return to Weatherfield later this year to confront the also-recast Todd (Gareth Pierce) for abandoning her three years ago.

The change comes about after Matilda Freeman, who had played Summer since 2017, decided to quit the show earlier this year.

"I'd like to say thank you to my second family, the cast, crew and viewers who have supported me during my time on the cobbles," said Freeman.

"After three and a half lovely years I felt it was time for a change and I'm excited to be starting that next chapter with a new role."

Bibby said: "I am so thrilled to be joining the cast of Coronation Street. My family have watched the show for years and I already feel part of the family.

"Matilda has wished me good luck, which was lovely! I'm looking forward to bringing Summer's sass and sparkle to the screen."

Coronation Street continues Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV.
