Coronation Street star Maureen Lipman has admitted that she is not keen on the prospect of her character Evelyn Plummer being 'softened' over time.
Evelyn was introduced to the cobbles in 2018 as the long-lost grandmother of Tyrone (Alan Halsall) and quickly gained a reputation for her acid-tongued putdowns and no-nonsense attitude.
Over the last year, however, Evelyn has become a fierce defender of her new family and is currently involved in a storyline which hints at a potential love interest.
"Well I think they have been trying to give Evelyn a whole new side for a while but I like the old her," Lipman told Good Morning Britain. "I am not keen on idea of softening her.
"I think it is a good balance to have someone who can speak her mind.
"When you watch the old episodes you watch them and they talk at the speed of the typewriter as it was written on a typewriter, so bring a bit of that back. She is formidable and I think she should stay formidable."
At the age of 74, Lipman is one of the small group of Corrie cast members that have yet to return to filming due to the coronavirus pandemic.
