Doctor Who's returning showrunner Russell T Davies has revealed that Neil Patrick Harris will play a villain as part of the show's 60th anniversary episode.
Filming is now underway on the first episodes following Jodie Whittaker's departure, with Ncuti Gatwa recently revealed to be the new Doctor.
Curiously, David Tennant has also been confirmed to return to the show alongside Catherine Tate as Donna Noble - and earlier this month, the pair were spotted filming scenes in Camden alongside Yasmin Finney, who will play new character Rose, and Bernard Cribbins, who played Donna's grandfather Wilf.
Recent rumours have suggested that the Tennant-Tate scenes could be for a surprise Christmas 2022 episode rather than the 60th anniversary special, scheduled for November 2023.
That speculation has yet to be substantiated, but a BBC statement has now suggested otherwise as it confirmed Patrick Harris is already filming scenes for the 60th anniversary.
Davies said: "It's my huge honour to open our studio doors for the mighty Neil Patrick Harris... but who, why, what is he playing? You'll just have to wait. But I promise you, the stuff we're shooting now is off the scale. Doctor beware!"
In a follow-up post on Instagram, he hinted at more details about the character, writing: "Neil Patrick Harris, welcome to Cardiff! Playing the greatest enemy the Doctor has ever faced. Such a great actor, such a great man, it's an honour and a hoot. Have fun! @nph @bbcdoctorwho ♥️Ha! 🎵"
Patrick Harris, meanwhile, wrote: "My current gig. Never looked more dashing. Thank you for inviting me into your Whoniverse, @russelltdavies63 . I'll try my hardest to do my worst. This Doctor has no idea what's in store. And even if he does... Who cares? Ha ha ha HA ha-ha-ha! @bbcdoctorwho"
Whittaker's final episode is due to air this autumn.
