Filming has reportedly started on the 'Black To Front' episode of Hollyoaks for broadcast in September.
In a broadcasting first, Channel 4 is handing over its entire schedule to programmes featuring black talent on and off camera on September 10.
The day will include special editions of signature shows, including Countdown and Celebrity Gogglebox, a one-off revival of The Big Breakfast and brand new programmes.
As C4's signature soap, Hollyoaks will air a one-hour special on the day with a focus on the Deveraux family, which includes Kelle Bryan (Martine), Richard Blackwood (Felix) and Trevor A Toussaint (Walter).
According to The Sun, five new black actors will be introduced in the episode, all of whom will stay on as series regulars, while two black actors will appear in guest roles.
The storyline is said to centre around a birthday party for Walter, with the script coming from staff writer Thabo Mhlatshwa and direction by Patrick Robinson.
"This Black to Front episode is a celebration of family traditions, which have historically held Black families and Black communities together since migration," said Bryan, who has been with the soap since 2018. "Our purpose is to make a meaningful contribution to the Black to Front tapestry aptly curated by Channel 4.
"Capitalising on Hollyoaks' youthful viewership, hopefully this will allow our audience to come on a journey with us, understanding our culture and realising the fundamentals that make us all the same.
"Once cultural differences are understood, this can often dissipate hatred, racism or bigotry, simply by telling truthful stories we can all relate to."
The episode is also being made by black members of the crew, including some newcomers who will be kept on as staff members.
