Former Liverpool and Leeds United defender Dominic Matteo is seen searching for his birth mother in next week's episode of Long Lost Family.
The ITV series, hosted by Davina McCall and Nicky Campbell, tries to help people track down their lost family members by using DNA experts, investigators and specially-trained intermediaries.
Matteo, now 47, was put up for adoption at birth and has never met his real mother, but after being diagnosed with a life-threatening brain tumour in 2019, he became determined to find her.
"I was fighting for my life this time last year," he says in the show. "I was just thinking about meeting my birth mother.
"When you're close to your life being over, it becomes more important."
