Avatar: The Way of Water becomes the seventh highest-grossing movie of all time and closes in on the top five.

Avatar: The Way of Water has overtaken Jurassic World to rank as the seventh highest-grossing movie all of time.

The epic sequel has now grossed $1.71 billion (£1.42 billion) in three-and-a-half weeks since release, beating Jurassic World's $1.69 billion.

The figure includes $517m (£427.8m) domestically and $1.19 billion (£0.98 billion) overseas and puts the film on track to surpass $2 billion in the coming weeks.

The Way Of Water is almost certain to leapfrog 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home ($1.91 billion) to sixth on the all-time list and could also outperform Avengers: Infinity War (fifth, $2.04 billion) and Star Wars: The Force Awakens (fourth, $2.07 billion).

The highest-grossing film of all time remains the original Avatar movie with box office receipts of $2.9 billion.
