Avatar: The Way of Water enjoyed a strong showing at the box office over the New Year period, taking its total revenues to date up to the $1.4 billion (£1.16 billion) mark globally.
The epic sequel to 2009's Avatar - itself the highest-grossing movie of all time - only hit the $1 billion milestone a few days ago but has now grown its domestic and international totals to $440.5m (£365.5m) and $956.9m (£793.9m) respectively.
The combined gross of $1.4 billion is significant as it marks the point at which analysts have estimated that the film enters profitability for Disney.
The Way of Water is now already the 14th highest-grossing movie of all time and is expected to surpass Avengers: Age of Ultron (13th, $1.4 billion), Frozen II (12th, $1.45 billion) and Top Gun: Maverick (11th, $1.49 billion) in the coming days.
Projections of the film's future performance are unclear, although should ticket receipts go past the $2 billion mark then it will become one of the top five highest-grossing movies of all time.
