Oscar-winning actress Glenda Jackson dies at the age of 87 after a brief illness.

Oscar-winning actress Glenda Jackson has died at the age of 87 after a brief illness, her agent has announced.

After collecting two Academy Awards, for Women In Love and A Touch of Class, Jackson entered the world of politics and served as the Labour MP for Hampstead and Kilburn between 1992 and 2015.

In recent years she returned to acting, going on to win a BAFTA TV Award, an International Emmy and a Tony Award.

A statement said: "Glenda Jackson, two-time Academy Award-winning actress and politician, died peacefully at her home in Blackheath, London this morning after a brief illness with her family at her side.

"She recently completed filming The Great Escaper in which she co-starred with Michael Caine."

Jackson is survived by her son, newspaper columnist Dan Hodges, and a grandson.
