Acclaimed actor James Caan - known for The Godfather, Misery and Elf - dies at the age of 82.

Acclaimed actor James Caan, known for his roles in films including The Godfather, Misery and Elf, has died at the age of 82.

During a career spanning back to the 1960s, he garnered an Oscar nomination and four Emmy nominations - and in 1978 he was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

In The Godfather he played Sonny Corleone, while in Misery he memorably played an injured author who was imprisoned by Kathy Bates's deranged Annie Wilkes.

A statement on his social media accounts said: "It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Jimmy on the evening of July 6.

"The family appreciates the outpouring of love and heartfelt condolences and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time."

Caan is survived by his five children.
