Simon Cowell says that he believes a future reunion of One Direction "will happen".

Simon Cowell has claimed that he could be capable of convincing One Direction to reunite in the near future.

The boyband - Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, Liam Payne and Zayn Malik - formed on Cowell's The X Factor in 2010 but went on hiatus in 2016, months after Malik quit the group.

Rumours that the boys could reunite last summer to mark their 10-year anniversary ultimately proved unfounded, but now Cowell has suggested that it is a question of when, rather than if, they will get back together.

"I think it will happen. If they got together, whether it's making records again or touring, it would be the most amazing thing," he told The Mirror.

"If I could get into a room with them and just say, 'You know what, whether it's six months or something, I think you'd have such a great time' – maybe I could persuade them.

"But I think they should do it, definitely. I would love it to happen. And the fans, of course, would love it."

Payne recently gave hope that a reunion could be in the works by revealing that he had enjoyed a "really lovely" catchup with Styles.
