Singer Marianne Faithfull, known for hits including 'Broken English', dies at the age of 78.

Marianne Faithfull, known for songs including 'Broken English' and 'As Tears Go By', has died at the age of 78.

The singer was one of the key figures of the British Invasion in the '60s and '70s and was a one-time girlfriend of Mick Jagger, who co-wrote 'Broken English'.

Faithfull was also an accomplished actress, starring in films such as The Girl on a Motorcycle and the 1969 version of Hamlet, and in recent years did voice work on Dune and Wild Summon.

In the early 1970s she suffered from severe drug addiction issues and anorexia, leading to her becoming homeless and sleeping on the streets of London's Soho for two years.

A spokesperson for the star said: "It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of the singer, songwriter and actress Marianne Faithfull.

"Marianne passed away peacefully in London today, in the company of her loving family. She will be dearly missed."

Faithfull is survived by son Nicholas and grandsons Oscar and Noah.
