John Humphrys has revealed that he is stepping down as host of Mastermind after 17 years in the role.
The 77-year-old took over hosting duties of the long-running quiz show in 2003 and has since hosted over 700 episodes across 18 regular series and various spinoff editions.
Announcing his decision in his column for the Daily Mail, Humphrys wrote: "I wish my successor well – but I'm not sure I envy them, whoever 'they' may be.
"I love doing the programme. I have always enjoyed it. That's the problem.
"I should have gone years ago. Obviously, I should have gone years ago."
Humphrys's final episodes at the helm of Mastermind, which celebrates its 50th anniversary next year, will air on BBC Two in March.
