Steph McGovern admits 'Have I Got News For You' was "weird"

Steph McGovern admits that the new format of Have I Got News For You was "weird".

This week's Have I Got News For You host Steph McGovern has admitted that the show's new format was a "weird" experience.

The long-running satirical quiz show returned for its 59th series but due to the coronavirus pandemic, McGovern and the four panellists appeared via separate video links from their respective homes.

There was also no live studio audience for the first time in the show's history, meaning that the only laughter came from the participants.

The new format came in for a mixed reception online, with Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan remarking: "My village mates' ZOOM session earlier this evening was a lot funnier than this. #HIGNFY"

McGovern herself responded to the criticism, posting: "Thanks for messages abt HIGNFY. It's been going 30yrs with same format so I think it's great that @HatTrickProd @electric_robin tried something different to keep it on air. It was weird but so is life at the mo"

Have I Got News For You returns next Friday with Stephen Mangan in the hosting chair.
