Aidan Turner will play the lead in The Suspect, a new psychological thriller for ITV from the team behind Line of Duty.

Aidan Turner has been cast as the lead in a new "nail-biting" ITV drama series from the production company responsible for Line of Duty.

Called The Suspect, the five-part drama is an adaptation of best-selling fiction writer Michael Robotham's debut novel of the same name.

Poldark actor Turner will play Doctor Joe O'Loughlin, who is brought in to assist the police in the case of a woman found dead in a shallow grave.

Other cast members include Small Axe's Shaun Parkes, Fleabag's Sian Clifford, Doctor Foster's Adam James and Vigil star Anjli Mohindra.

"Bringing The Suspect to the screen has been a fantastic and fascinating journey," said screenwriter Peter Berry.

"I hope the audience will find it equally enthralling as they delve the depths of a truly iconic character caught up in a story that will test his faith in his profession, his family and himself."

Turner added: "I am thrilled to be taking on the complex and demanding role of Joseph O'Loughlin, a man with so much to give but so much to lose, and a hidden darker side."

The Suspect is being filmed this autumn and is expected to air on ITV in 2022.
