The endurance reality show Survivor will return to UK screens for the first time in 21 years, the BBC announces.

The BBC has confirmed that Survivor will return to British screens in 2023 after an absence of 21 years.

The show sees a group of strangers stranded in a remote location with only basic supplies, regularly competing against each other to avoid elimination and ultimately win a huge cash prize as the last person standing.

Survivor has been a firm fixture on US screens since 2000 - its 43rd season is due to begin later this month - while in the UK, a local version ran for just two series on ITV in 2001 and 2002.

The BBC reboot will run to 16 one-hour episodes and feature 20 contestants - initially being split into two competing tribes, who will eventually merge as the format switches more to individual competition.

Kate Phillips, the BBC's director of unscripted, said: "Survivor is a global television hit and to be able to bring one of TV's most successful formats to audiences in the UK in a uniquely BBC way is a very exciting prospect indeed."

Details of how to apply to take part will be announced in the coming months.
