Veteran Hollywood actor Dick Van Dyke has filmed a guest role in the US soap Days of Our Lives.

The 97-year-old, whose showbiz career goes back to the 1940s, revealed to Access Hollywood that he approached cast member Drake Hogestyn, 69, about a part while they were working out at the same gym.

"Drake and I went to the same gym together," he said. "I used to kid him, 'Say, don't you ever have any parts for old people? Come on, give me a part!' And he took me seriously. He got me a part."

He added: "I have played old men before, but comedy old men. First time I ever just played my 97-year-old self."

In the episode, which will air this September, Van Dyke will play an old man with amnesia in a scene that will also feature Hogestyn's John Black.

Van Dyke recently hit the headlines after crashing his car into a gate while driving in California during rainy weather, an incident which left him with only minor bruises.
