Long-running quiz format Eggheads is to return for a new series on Channel 5 with Jeremy Vine retained as presenter.

Long-running quiz show Eggheads is to move from the BBC to Channel 5 later this year, it has been confirmed.

The show - first broadcast in 2003 - sees contestants take on a group of quizzing experts, known as the Eggheads, in subjects such as sports, politics, history and music.

Jeremy Vine became the sole presenter of the quiz in 2014 and will front the rebooted version on Channel 5, more than a year after its last broadcast on the BBC.

"This is my big announcement. I don't have many of these I tell you," he wrote on social media.

"The programme which I've presented for more than 10 years, Eggheads, one of the greatest quizzes in the history of British TV, is moving to Channel 5 later this year."

Daniel Pearl, Channel 5's commissioning editor, added: "I'm delighted that Eggheads, one of the UK's most loved quiz shows, has found a brand new home on Channel 5.

"This is yet another step in the transformation of Channel 5 as it grows its audience rapidly."

The lineup of Eggheads on the new series has yet to be confirmed.
