HBO confirms a second season for its Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon.

HBO has officially confirmed a second season for the Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon.

The highly-anticipated show premiered last weekend to impressive ratings on both sides of the pond, with 10 million and 1.4 million watching in the first 24 hours in the US and UK respectively.

"We are beyond proud of what the entire House of the Dragon team has accomplished with season one," said Francesca Orsi, evp of HBO's programming.

"Our phenomenal cast and crew undertook a massive challenge and exceeded all expectations, delivering a show that has already established itself as must-see-TV.

"We couldn't be more excited to continue bringing to life the epic saga of House Targaryen with season two."

Zai Bennett, MD of content at Sky, added: House of the Dragon is already proving to be a ratings hit, and we predict it will go from strength to strength due to the captivating storytelling and incredible production values.

"We look forward to sharing a second series with our customers on Sky and NOW."

The second season is expected to air either in late 2023 or early 2024.
