Al Jean, executive producer of The Simpsons, discusses his idea for the show's final episode.

The Simpsons executive producer Al Jean has discussed an idea he has had for the show's potential final ever episode.

The animated sitcom has been on the air continuously since 1989, setting records for the longest-running animated series and longest-running sitcom in US TV history.

Although a finale is not on the cards in the immediate future, Jean would like such an episode to build up to the first ever episode, 'Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire', which saw the family attending a Christmas pageant.

"Well, it might be like the Heisenberg principle, in that now that I've stated it, it's less likely to happen," he told Digital Spy.

"I just thought that the beautiful thing about that would be that the whole show would never have an end. It would be a loop."

He added: "Fortunately, we are not tasked with coming up with an ending any time soon. Nobody's going, 'Let's wrap it up.' No-one. So, we'll see."

The Simpsons is currently in the middle of airing its 33rd season and has already been renewed for a 34th, meaning that it will remain on air until at least 2023.
