Ariana Grande denies Mariah Carey number one

Mariah Carey is denied the chance to finally make number one with 'All I Want For Christmas' by Ariana Grande's 'Positions'.

Ariana Grande has denied Mariah Carey the chance to finally claim a UK number one for her iconic festive hit 'All I Want For Christmas'.

After a dismal 2020, the feel-good song re-entered the charts earlier than ever before several weeks ago and was seriously challenging for top spot for much of this week - but ultimately finished at number two.

Grande saw off the challenge with her single 'Positions', which has now made it six weeks in a row on top of the chart - equalling her previous best stint after 'Thank U, Next' managed six weeks on top two years ago.

Another song famously never to make number one, Wham's 'Last Christmas', is in the chart at three - up 17 places - while 'Fairytale of New York' is up to eight.

On the albums chart, Gary Barlow debuts at number one with his fifth solo effort Music Played By Humans after chart sales of 46,500 across the week.

The latest comeback album from Steps, What The Future Holds, is forced to settle for second place, while Miley Cyrus's Plastic Hearts opens at four.
