Boris Johnson pays tribute as Coronation Street turns 60

Boris Johnson congratulates Coronation Street as the iconic soap celebrates its 60th birthday.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has sent his congratulations to the cast and crew of Coronation Street as the soap celebrates its 60th birthday.

The show marked a world-leading 60 years on the air last night with a special episode that included the conclusion of a long-running domestic abuse storyline.

Taking to Twitter before the episode aired, the PM wrote: "The residents of Weatherfield have entertained us for six fantastic decades with gripping storylines & characters loved by many.

"Coronation Street is not only a great British institution but a place where many across our country feel at home.

"Happy 60th Birthday @itvcorrie."

Last week parliament held a special session in tribute to Corrie, led by former star-turned-MP Tracy Brabin.
