Long-running Coronation Street story reaches shock conclusion

Coronation Street's long-running domestic abuse storyline concludes during the soap's 60th anniversary episode.

Coronation Street's acclaimed domestic abuse storyline reached a shocking conclusion on Wednesday night in an episode that marked the soap's 60th birthday.

In a plot running for the last two years, viewers have seen Geoff (Ian Bartholomew) gradually take more and more control of his wife Yasmeen (Shelley King) - and for the last few months she has been imprisoned after finally snapping and striking him with a broken wine bottle.

On Monday night's episode, a jury found her innocent of attempted murder and she was released but Geoff's reign of terror was not quite over and on Wednesday, he trapped her in their family home before setting alight to it.

Yasmeen made a frantic dash upstairs and managed to escape to the roof, but Geoff was close behind and threatened to take them both down to their deaths.

After a final exchange in which she stood up for herself and branded him a "pathetic excuse for a man", Geoff lost his grip and began to fall from the roof.

Despite Yasmeen's attempt to help Geoff back to safety, he fell from the roof and into their garden - killing him instantly.

Taking to Twitter after the episode aired, Bartholomew shared a picture of Geoff lying dead on the floor alongside the message: "Bye Bye everybody. Bye Bye."
