Morrissey says that he has been axed by record label BMG, describing it as "perfectly in keeping with the relentless galvanic horror of 2020".

Morrissey has hit out at BMG after the label dropped him after a three-album deal.

The 62-year-old singer - formerly of The Smiths - has always been one of the industry's most outspoken figures but has increasingly alienated his traditional fanbase in recent years with support for far-right political groups.

Earlier this year Morrissey released his 13th solo studio album, I Am Not a Dog on a Chain, which reached an impressive number three on the UK albums chart, but a change of management at BMG has seen him dropped.

"This news is perfectly in keeping with the relentless galvanic horror of 2020," the musician said in a statement through the Morrissey Central website. "We would be critically insane to expect anything positive.

"My three albums with BMG have been the best of my career, and I stand by them till death. Recording them has been a pivotal period in my life, and I thank the previous BMG team and everyone involved for that.

"It's still important to me to do music my own way, and I wouldn't want to be on a label that dictates so specifically how their artists should behave - especially when the word 'talent' is notably never mentioned."

Morrissey is now said to be searching for a new label to release some newly-created material.
