Spitting Image renewed for second series

BritBox announces that satirical sketch show Spitting Image will return for a second series next autumn.

BritBox has confirmed that Spitting Image has been renewed for a second series, less than a week after its return to screens.

The satirical sketch show was a key part of the cultural landscape in the 1980s and 1990s, using caricature puppets to lambast the politicians and celebrities of the day.

After a break of more than 20 years, streaming service BritBox has revived the show and is premiering new episodes every Saturday, with sketches being recorded close to release in order to incorporate the major events from the week's news.

Announcing the show's renewal for autumn 2021 today, BritBox also reported that the show had driven a ten-fold increase in average daily signups to its service.

"The fantastic response to Spitting Image just goes to show how much the world needs public service satire," said BritBox chief creative Reemah Sakaan.

"Not only can subscribers look forward to another 9 weeks of anarchy but also now another series in 2021."

The first episode of the show premiered in the US through Facebook after a deal with major broadcaster NBC collapsed at the 11th hour due to their concerns it may have been too risqué.
