Craig Doyle reportedly emerges as the new favourite to replace Phillip Schofield as host on This Morning.

Craig Doyle has reportedly emerged as the new favourite to replace Phillip Schofield on This Morning.

After hosting the daytime show for 21 years, Schofield was forced to step down last month after admitting to lying about having an affair with a young colleague several years ago.

Holly Willoughby is remaining with the programme as the main female host and will be back on screens after her half-term break this coming Monday, June 5.

Early candidates to replace Schofield have included Friday presenters Dermot O'Leary and Alison Hammond, while Rylan Clark and Josie Gibson have also been linked to the post.

According to The Sun, however, the current frontrunner is Doyle, 51, who is chiefly known for his work as a sports presenter but has also been a stand-in host on the show in the past.

A spokesman for betting firm BoyleSports told the newspaper: "Craig stood in for Dermot on the show last week and it seemed to have sparked an interest with viewers who are now betting on him to land the gig.

"Social media lit up with praise for Doyle as he hosted alongside Alison Hammond which wouldn't have gone unnoticed with ITV bosses."

Other candidates include Vernon Kay and Joel Dommett.
