Disney announces that Disney+ now has more than 116 million subscribers worldwide, beating analyst forecasts.

The launch of the Loki spinoff has helped to propel Disney+'s subscriber base to an impressive 116 million, Disney has announced.

At the start of April the total stood at 103.6 million - slightly down on analyst forecasts - but in the second quarter of the year the streaming service added an impressive net of 12.4 million.

The news means that Disney+'s total subscriber base, which stood at 57.5 million last summer, has more than doubled in the space of just 12 months.

The increase also comes despite a host of price rises - although the average revenue per subscriber has actually fallen by 10% due to the launch of a low-cost version of the service in India, which has pulled the figure down.

Further major programme launches are expected in the second half of 2021, with Marvel series Hawkeye and Ms. Marvel, as well as Star Wars spinoff The Book of Boba Fett, still to come.
