Haley Z Boston, creator of Netflix’s horror miniseries Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen, has explained one of the key twists in the final episode.
The show follows couple Rachel (Camila Morrone) and Nicky (Adam DiMarco) in the week leading up to their extravagant wedding in front of Nicky’s numerous relatives at the family home in the woods.
In the climactic finale, the “very bad” thing was revealed to be a curse which ended up killing almost all of Nicky’s family in gory fashion on a bloodied dancefloor after Rachel decided not to marry him.
Rachel then died herself in a pool of blood out on the snowy atrium, but hours later she came back to life as the new Witness – an ageless figure responsible for overseeing the curse over the years.
Speaking exclusively to Radio Times, Boston explained: “It was important to me that Rachel was active in the finale and that, even after making her decision, she has to recalibrate, and she gets another chance to make another decision [about whether to marry Nicky].
“And she says no, but of course, I didn’t want her to die. That would have been so bleak! Ultimately, by becoming the new Witness, she is reborn.
“It’s a break-up story, so she gets to leave with this freedom and this new life. And that’s kind of how it feels to leave a relationship. It’s bittersweet, and obviously you’re leaving some hurt people in your wake.
“But she’s triumphant at the end, and she chooses herself, and that was important to me.”
