Charity and Mack on Emmerdale on August 8, 2025 / ITV
Emmerdale actor Lawrence Robb has conceded that his character Mack could soon be facing the end of his relationship with Charity (Emma Atkins).
The couple have hit troubled waters again in recent weeks after Charity made the unanimous decision to be a surrogate for her granddaughter Sarah (Katie Hill) and fiancé Jacob (Joe-Warren Plant).
Mack has reluctantly agreed to go along with the plan and tried to be supportive, but tensions reach a new height in next week’s episodes after Charity seemingly forgets the three-year anniversary of the day they lost their own baby.
“On the day I think he is pretty upset and heartbroken that she hasn’t remembered,” said Robb, who is rumoured to be leaving the show this autumn after more than five years. “Alongside the fact she’s undergoing all this for Sarah, I think Mack is pretty sad she hasn’t recognised this is also an important time for them as a couple.
“His depth of feeling probably wouldn’t have had the same vigour last year, as that anniversary didn’t have the same significance as it does this year, simply because of what Charity has decided to go through.
“Ultimately, there is the argument of her body, her choice, but I think in this instance, he’s very cut up. In fact I was very clear on set when we shot these scenes, it was not just ‘what about me?’ But I was very careful to add ‘what about us?’, because I think them being a partnership is the key. It is the pinnacle fact here.
“The surrogacy has been a very difficult thing for him to navigate because on one hand, Charity is doing a lovely and a very important thing for her granddaughter, but on the other hand, she herself went through an ectopic pregnancy and she nearly died. It wasn’t the reason they broke up or how Reuben came about, but it certainly was a factor.”
A blazing row between the pair then ensues, which results in Charity kicking Mack out to leave their marriage in limbo.
“It’s not looking good,” Robb continued, adding: “It all comes tumbling out. I think Charity goes into fight or flight and although she probably can hear his reasoning she immediately puts her guard up and immediately puts her heckles up and starts firing back. Which is understandable, but ultimately, Mack said he was okay with the whole thing, but he’s really not.”
Emmerdale continues weekdays from 7am on ITVX and at 7.30pm on ITV1.
