Alex Kingston for Strictly Come Dancing 2025 / BBC
Alex Kingston has said that her iconic Doctor Who character River Song would make for an ideal contestant on Strictly Come Dancing.
The actress, who is competing on this year’s show with Johannes Radebe, played The Doctor’s future wife on multiple occasions between 2008 and 2015.
River Song was known for her bold, all-action and cheeky demeanour, yet always remaining somewhat of an enigma due to her meeting The Doctor in a non-linear fashion.
“River Song would be a good contestant for Strictly!” Kingston told press ahead of taking to the dancefloor for the first time. “She’d adore the sequins and the big hair.
“Although she does like to lead, so she might not be the best dance partner. There might be a tussle in terms of who would actually be leading the dance!”
Asked why she is taking part in Strictly this year, she answered: “One of my friends actually texted me when they heard I was doing it and said, ‘Finally! You’ve been banging on about Strictly for 20 years, you’re finally doing it!’
“It really felt like now or never, so I decided to just jump in and go for it.”
Strictly Come Dancing‘s first live show airs Saturday night at 6.55pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
