Sky commissions documentaries on Man Utd, Tina Turner, Stephen Hawking

Sky announces an eclectic slate of documentary commissions, including profiles of Manchester United, Tina Turner, Stephen Hawking and The Go-Go's.

Sky has announced nine new commissions ahead of the launch of its new channels Sky Documentaries and Sky Nature next week.

The two new factual channels will launch on Wednesday, May 27 - the same day that History gets a rebrand as Sky History - in the latest shakeup of the Sky portfolio, which has also seen the launch of Sky Crime and Sky Comedy in recent months.

The slate of commissions includes The United Way, a one-off piece narrated by Eric Cantona that profiles one of the world's most successful football clubs in Manchester United, and Tyson Bruno, which tells the stories of boxing legends Mike Tyson and Frank Bruno.

Tina Turner charts the singer's rise to global superstardom and features exclusive access to Turner herself, The Go-Go's profiles the pioneering punk band and there are also "definitive biographies" of scientist Stephen Hawking and Hollywood legend Steve McQueen.

In a three-part natural history series, shark expert Steve Backshall will attempt to "dispel the myth of sharks as cold-blooded killers", while Lancaster is a history doc commemorating the iconic WWII aircraft.

"These new commissions showcase Sky's investment in world-class original content and the breadth and range of factual shows our customers will be able to find on Sky Documentaries and Sky Nature," said Zai Bennett, MD of content at Sky.

"With the launch of these two new services and Sky History, we want to provide viewers with compelling, engaging and informative TV, a place where nature and documentary fans can gravitate to."

The documentaries will air from later this year and into 2021.
