MTV scraps plans to hold VMAs at Barclays Center

Coronavirus concerns mean that this year's MTV VMAs will no longer be held at Brooklyn's Barclays Center.

MTV has decided not to go ahead with hosting this year's VMAs from Brooklyn's Barclays Center later this month due to ongoing concerns over coronavirus.

The US has suffered more deaths due to COVID-19 than any other country in the world, and New York is the most-affected state, with around 450,000 confirmed cases and almost 33,000 deaths to date.

Last month it was announced that the ceremony would proceed on August 30 under "best practices" of health and safety developed by the broadcaster and NY state officials.

Now MTV has announced that the show will still be happening but will take place in various outdoor spaces around New York City.

"The 2020 VMAs will be held on Sunday, August 30th and pay homage to the incredible resiliency of New York with several outdoor performances around the City with limited or no audience, adhering to all state and city guidelines," confirmed a statement.

"In close consultation with state and local health officials‎, it became clear at this time that outdoor performances with limited or no audience would be more feasible and safer than an indoor event.

"The VMAs will highlight the boroughs in an exciting show and return to Barclays Center in 2021.

"MTV will continue to work closely with the Department of Health, state and local officials, the medical community, and key stakeholders to ensure the safety of all involved."

Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga lead the nominations at this year's ceremony, which will be hosted by Scream Queens actress Keke Palmer.
