The much-anticipated last ever episode of Gavin & Stacey aired on BBC One on Christmas Day night, with millions of viewers thought to have tuned in to see how the comedy ended.
The previous special, which aired at Christmas 2019, ended on a cliffhanger as Nessa (Ruth Jones) got down on one knee to propose to Smithy (James Corden).
Five years on, Smithy was preparing to get married - albeit not to Nessa, but his clearly-unsuitable girlfriend Sophie (Laura Aikman). The episode saw the Barry clan travel to Billericay for the stag and hen dos as Mick (Larry Lamb) and Pam (Alison Steadman) played hosts.
Stacey (Joanna Page) was clearly unhappy with Smithy's choice of bride and urged Gavin (Mathew Horne) to intervene, but he insisted that they should support his best friend, only to change his mind as the vows were about to be exchanged and log his objections.
In a wake-up call for Smithy, all of his friends and family stood one by one to agree with Gavin, including his son Neil The Baby (Oscar Hartland), and he ditched Sophie before dashing to Southampton to propose to Nessa before she left on a cargo ship.
Smithy's heartfelt plea rang true for Nessa and she accepted his proposal - and in the dying moments of the episode viewers saw them tie the knot in a registry office before holding their reception in a pub.
Elsewhere in the finale, Gwen (Melanie Walters) was revealed to be in a relationship with Nessa's ex Dave Coaches (Steffan Rhodri), Dawn (Julia Davis) and Pete (Adrian Scarborough) divorced but got back together and the mystery of Uncle Bryn (Rob Brydon) and Jason's (Robert Wilfort) infamous fishing trip remained unresolved.
