Newcastle United announce that "outstanding" defender Fabian Schar has extended his contract at the club.

Newcastle United have announced that defender Fabian Schar has extended his contract at the club.

The 33-year-old was due to see his previous deal expire at the end of this season, but he has now put pen to paper on a new contract that runs until the end of the 2025-26 campaign.

Schar is one of the longest-serving players is Eddie Howe's current first-team squad having joined the Magpies from Spanish outfit Deportivo La Coruna in July 2018.

The Switzerland international has made 221 appearances for Newcastle across all competitions, scoring on 19 occasions including a sensational goal in the Magpies' memorable 4-1 Champions League win over Paris Saint-Germain in October 2023.

Schar has been a mainstay in Howe's first team this term, starting 32 of his 34 appearances in all tournaments at centre-back, and he was part of the Newcastle squad that won the EFL Cup last month - the club's first domestic trophy for 70 years.

Speaking to the club's official website after signing his new deal, Schar said: "I'm buzzing to extend my stay here. It's been a very good few weeks for everybody at Newcastle United after winning the Carabao Cup and I'm really happy now to sign another contract with this amazing club.

"Key player" Schar pens one-year contract extension at Newcastle

"It's my seventh season here and everybody knows how happy I am at the club and how comfortable I feel in the city, so I'm really glad to be continuing that.

"Now it's about looking forward and finishing the season as strong as possible."

Howe added: "Fabian has been outstanding in my time at the club. As well as his performances on the pitch, he has shown a fantastic attitude in the group.

"He has been the heartbeat of the club's season so far, and he'll continue to be a key player for us as we strive to finish as high in the table as possible."

Newcastle's sporting director Paul Mitchell continued: "We are pleased to extend Fabian's contract. He has played a significant role in the club's growth in recent years and continues to have an important role to play on and off the pitch.

"We take a strategic view on sustaining and building the squad and will continue to work collaboratively to ensure our squad dynamic is optimised for success in the short and long term."

Schar is now focused on helping Newcastle qualify for next season's Champions League; he played in the club's 2-1 win over Brentford in the Premier League on Wednesday and that result helped the Magpies climb up to fifth in the table, just one point behind fourth-placed Manchester City who have played a game more.
