Sky has commissioned an in-depth documentary on the murder of rapper Tupac Shakur, 30 years on from his assassination.
The influential musician died in hospital at the age of just 25 on September 13, 1996 – succumbing to injuries six days after he took four bullets in a drive-by shooting in Nevada.
For decades the murder remained unsolved but in a documentary broadcast in 2018, gang leader Duane “Keefe D” Davis confessed to the crime – but it was only last month that he was found guilty of first-degree murder.
The Sky doc covers the trial in forensic detail, including courtroom proceedings and footage filmed concurrently with Tupac’s family and inner circle.
“I want this film to give a voice to a family who are not just grieving, but who have taken back agency in how the murder of Tupac is viewed,” said Marian Mohamed, the film’s director.
“Most importantly, I want this film to make people laugh and cry and argue. I want whoever watches this to emotionally connect with not just the story of how Tupac died but with who he was.”
Hayley Reynolds, Sky’s head of documentary commissioning, added: “For thirty years, Tupac Shakur’s murder has been surrounded by myth, speculation and conspiracy.
“Marian and the team have secured extraordinary access to his family and those closest to the case, capturing this historic moment as it unfolded and we’re excited to be bringing this powerful film to Sky Documentaries.”
The untitled piece will go out on Sky in 2027.
