Shannon Amy has become the second baker to be eliminated from this year’s series of The Great British Bake Off.
The show’s first ever Audience Choice Week featured a series of challenges suggested by viewers, starting with a Signature of a baked cheesecake which saw the bakers cook alongside a relative or loved one.
This week’s Technical saw the bakers given two hours to make any bake of their choosing, using base ingredients typically found in most home kitchens, while the Showstopper was to create a wearable bake, such as a hat or handbag.
Clara was named this week’s Star Baker after she impressed with her Piña Colada Couture handbag, made from coconut and a pineapple sponge.
Meanwhile, Shannon was informed that she would be the one to leave the tent, after her Showstopper – named ‘The Fairy Wings of The Painted Brook’ – was criticised for being too basic.
“I expected more to it,” Paul Hollywood told her. “I think it’s slightly overbaked.”
Nigella Lawson was also slightly underwhelmed, telling Paul afterwards: “For four hours, a biscuit with Royal icing – as charming as it was, you’ve got to do something that’s a showstopper for the Showstopper.”
Speaking after her elimination was announced, Shannon said: “It’s so hard to put into words what this has meant to me. I have become myself if anything, and I have let go of any persona of who I wish I was. I have just really been me and it has been life changing. That is the word life changing, and I don’t want to say goodbye to anyone!”
The Great British Bake Off continues next Tuesday at 8pm on Channel 4 with Bread Week.
