The BBC has announced plans to launch a new Radio 6 Music offshoot on BBC Sounds dedicated to indie music.
The new 24/7 station will air “the biggest and best indie rock and pop” music from the 1980s to the 2010s, featuring artists such as Arctic Monkeys, Oasis, Pulp, The Killers, The Smiths and The Stone Roses.
The schedule will also include historic interviews and live sessions from the BBC Archive, a show platforming emerging British artists and a simulcast of 6 Music’s Friday night indie show Indie Forever.
“Since its launch in 2002, 6 Music has evolved significantly to embrace and champion a wide range of alternative music genres,” said Samantha Moy, head of 6 Music.
“This extension aims to honour 6 Music’s beginnings and apply the station’s curious spirit and storytelling strength to a sound and scene that is loved by so many.”
The launch of the new station, which is subject to Ofcom approval, has been earmarked for this Summer.
