Channel 4 has outlined plans to slash 28% of its workforce – some 340 roles – by the end of this year.
The broadcaster said that it has developed a long-term plan for a “simpler, more focused organisation” that prioritises protecting content spend amid the emergence of new competitors – including the large streamers – and the volatile advertising market.
It said: “Channel 4 has proposed a new organisational design, alongside more efficient ways of working, which would greatly reduce non-programming spend. Under the proposals, overall headcount will be reduced by approximately 340 roles, equivalent to 28% of Channel 4’s workforce, by the end of the year.
“The proposed changes focus on reducing management layers, simplifying decision-making and removing duplication to create a leaner, more efficient operating model. The broadcaster will begin a formal consultation process with affected employees in due course.”
C4 chair Geoff Cooper said: “The proposals announced today are intended to secure Channel 4’s future as a trusted, independent British broadcaster.
“By taking action now, it can build a more sustainable and resilient organisation, maximise investment in content and strengthen its ability to deliver public value for audiences, the creative industries and the UK for the years ahead.”
