Charles Lawson as Jim McDonald on Coronation Street / ITV
Charles Lawson has admitted that he is pleased that his character Jim McDonald is being killed off in Coronation Street.
The patriarch of the McDonald clan arrived in Weatherfield in 1989 and was a formidable presence on the Street through the ’90s, leaving in 2000 but returning sporadically over the next two decades.
Jim’s last appearance came in 2018 and saw him scam his family – and in an upcoming plot, son Steve (Simon Gregson) gets a phone call to tell him that his dad has died in hospital.
“That is it. It’s a tragedy he didn’t go in a shooting or something dramatic, powerful and great,” Lawson told The Sun. “But that wasn’t possible because they’d effectively chopped his balls off.”
He continued: “Now he can’t be ruined any more. He’s out of his misery.
“I know I will watch that last scene and be able to say, ‘Well, what a load of shite that was’.
“I will raise a glass to the old Jim, the one I loved and was proud of, who spoke his mind, with cracking, strong storylines in the Nineties.”
Jim’s off-screen death will play out later this month.
