Charles Lawson as Jim McDonald on Coronation Street / ITV
Coronation Street icon Jim McDonald will be killed off in an off-screen storyline next month, it has emerged.
The character – played by Charles Lawson – was a mainstay on the soap from 1989 to 2000, thereafter making occasional appearances every few years until 2018.
According to the Radio Times, next month Jim’s son Steve (Simon Gregson) will get a phone call informing him that his estranged dad has died.
Jim’s long-suffering ex-wife Liz McDonald (Beverley Callard) is not expected to return for the storyline, while the potential on-screen involvement of Steve’s brother Andy (Nicholas Cochrane) is unknown.
Lawson, who made 1,168 appearances as Jim, is said to have been made aware of the decision to kill off his character.
The plot echoes that of another iconic Corrie character, Les Battersby (Bruce Jones), who died off screen in a workplace abattoir accident in 2024.
