Cain's prostate cancer storyline on Emmerdale in February 2026 / ITV
Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in a new Emmerdale storyline, it has been revealed.
The plot began in the Corriedale crossover episode when hospital tests suggested that he had an underlying condition – and in next week’s episodes, a doctor confirms to Cain that he has an aggressive but localised form of prostate cancer.
As the doctor talks through the prostatectomy procedure, Cain gets overwhelmed and leaves the hospital before clashing with anyone that comes in his way.
A special episode will see the viewers hear Cain’s inner thoughts as he attempts to process not only his health condition but also the news that wife Moira (Natalie J Robb) has been charged with double murder.
“Cain instinctively felt like the right character to tell this story,” said Emmerdale producer Laura Shaw. “He is a complex man that doesn’t normally talk about his feelings or channel them in a helpful way.
“It’s important men are encouraged to get checked, but we also want to sensitively explore the possible side effects patients may have, but don’t necessarily talk about.
“It’s also a love story for Cain and Moira as they navigate the tough times ahead as a married couple.”
Hordley said: “I feel really honoured to be given this storyline and I am excited for the challenges it is already throwing at me. This is the first proper illness my character, Cain, has been given and I want to play my part in making sure the audience can relate to the journey so many families unfortunately have to navigate.”
The storyline will play out over the coming months as Cain’s friends and family come to terms with his diagnosis.
