Shebz Miah as Kammy in Emmerdale / ITV
Emmerdale has introduced a new storyline that aims to shed light on the “hidden homeless” problem.
Centre of the new plot is fan-favourite Kammy (Shebz Miah), who is homeless, sleeping in vehicles and barns – but those closest to him are unaware of his issue as he is still holding down a job and embarking on a new relationship.
In future episodes, when Kammy’s plight is known, the villagers soon rally around him – although Emmerdale producer Sophie Roper explained that she hopes the storyline will highlight those who are not as fortunate.
“This storyline is a vital look at ‘hidden homelessness,’ showing that people can be living on the edge of society, sleeping in their vehicle or barns, while still successfully holding down a job and maintaining relationships,” she said.
“For many reasons, a person’s circumstances can change dramatically and we wanted to challenge the perception of what homelessness looks like and prove that what people present to the outside world isn’t necessarily the whole story. We hope this narrative encourages our viewers to look closer and remember that things are not always quite as they seem.”
New episodes of Emmerdale drop weekdays at 7am on ITVX and also air the same night at 8pm on ITV1.
