Ruben Amorim provides an injury update ahead of his side's Premier League clash against Nottingham Forest on Tuesday, and his comments highlight a long-term issue.

Ruben Amorim has revealed that Luke Shaw will not be available for selection for Manchester United's clash against Nottingham Forest in the Premier League on Tuesday.

The England international has made just two appearances in the top flight this season, with the left-back's injury problems continuing to impact his club career.

Shaw only featured in 12 league games in 2023-24 and has started 20 or fewer league matches in three of his prior five seasons at Old Trafford.

However, Amorim did hint that Mason Mount could see some action, while Kobbie Mainoo is nearing a return, saying: "Mount is feeling better but was already on the bench for the last game. Kobbie is almost ready but not for this game."

The Portuguese boss also confirmed that Lisandro Martinez, Jonny Evans and Ayden Heaven will miss out, while Harry Maguire and Leny Yoro should be available.

Shaw's absence highlights major problem at United

United are currently on track to accumulate just 48 points in the league this season, and that would represent their worst ever tally in the history of the Premier League.

Though Shaw is unavailable through no fault of his own, the club have several players still on their books that are either regularly injured or are unable to contribute positively.

Since signing for the Red Devils in 2023-24, Mount has only started nine top-flight matches while playing fewer than 800 minutes.

Centre-back Lisandro Martinez is set to miss the rest of the season due to injury, and his injuries this campaign are concerning given he started just eight Premier League fixtures last term.

Elsewhere, former Real Madrid star Casemiro has often been criticised for his performances in midfield, with the Brazilian frequently linked with an exit from Old Trafford.

Others such as Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford have been loaned out to Premier League rivals following turbulent spells at United.

Having so many players at the club that are unable to contribute - either because of injuries or form - has been damaging to the team's ability to compete, and it is difficult to see that changing unless several signings are made in the summer transfer window.
